Expat work
permit: Foreingers living in colombia have to report their place of residence and job to
the DAS. The work permits are normally limited to a specific job in a specific company. For long
term residents there exists a different status that is called a "qualified resident
status" this means that there is no limitation in work permit at all - this is normally
associated with a non limited visa obtained by family boundaries in colombia and long term
stay.
Most of the long term european - colombian expats are
business people living in colombia running their own independent life style. The typical short
term expat only stays on a company job for 1-3 years and leaves the country after
reassignation.
Naturally a 1-3 year stay is not enough to absorb the country
style of doing business. A real colombia expat should have 7 or more years of inunterrupted stay
in colombia to be able to really understand both worlds.
